Proper storage & handling

Purity only matters if it survives the trip to your bench. This guide covers temperature ranges, shelf life in both lyophilized and reconstituted states, freeze–thaw and light protection, BAC water handling, and what to do the moment a shipment arrives.

The rules change completely the moment powder becomes solution.

Most stable state

Lyophilized (unmixed powder)

A freeze-dried peptide is the most stable form you will handle. With moisture and light kept out, most sequences remain within spec for extended periods.

  • Refrigerated at 2–8°C (36–46°F): commonly cited as stable for 12–24 months
  • Frozen at −20°C or below: long-term archival storage, often 24+ months
  • Room temperature in transit: short excursions of days are generally tolerated
  • Keep the vial sealed and in its box — light and humidity are the real enemies

Reconstituted (mixed with BAC water)

Once liquid, the peptide is in solution and degradation begins. Bacteriostatic water contains 0.9% benzyl alcohol, which suppresses microbial growth but does not stop chemical breakdown.

  • Store at 2–8°C (refrigerated) at all times — never on the counter
  • Typical usable window: 28–30 days for most sequences
  • Shorter window (14–21 days) for fragile blends and glow/KLOW-type cocktails
  • Discard immediately if the solution turns cloudy, stringy, or shows particulate
Diluent handling

Bacteriostatic water

BAC water is a consumable with its own shelf life. Treat the stopper as a sterile surface every single time.

  • Unopened: store at room temperature, away from light, until the printed expiry
  • Once punctured: commonly used within 28 days, refrigerated
  • Alcohol-swab the rubber stopper before every draw — no exceptions
  • Never use tap, distilled, or saline in place of BAC water for multi-dose vials

The four handling rules

2–8°C

Temperature

The main refrigerator body — not the door — is where vials belong. Door shelves swing 5–10°C every time the fridge opens.

  • Back middle shelf is the most temperature-stable spot
  • Do not store next to the freezer vent where vials can partially freeze
  • Use a small fridge thermometer if you are storing a full protocol
Avoid repeats

Freeze–thaw cycles

Each freeze and thaw cycle mechanically shears peptide chains. One controlled freeze is fine; repeated cycling is what destroys potency.

  • Never freeze a reconstituted vial you intend to keep drawing from
  • For long-term storage, aliquot into single-use sterile vials before freezing
  • Thaw in the refrigerator, never in warm water or a microwave
Keep it dark

Light exposure

UV and strong ambient light drive oxidation of sensitive residues — tryptophan, methionine and cysteine especially.

  • Keep vials in the original carton or an opaque container
  • Do not leave vials on a windowsill or under lab lighting between draws
  • Amber vials help, but the box is still better
Gentle only

Physical handling

Peptides are long fragile chains. Agitation denatures them faster than most people expect.

  • Aim BAC water down the inside vial wall — never spray directly onto the powder cake
  • Swirl gently or roll between the palms; never shake
  • Let the cake dissolve on its own — this can take a few minutes
  • Do not vortex unless a protocol specifically calls for it

Shipping, receiving & travel

Transit warmth is normal

Lyophilized powder tolerates several days at ambient temperature. A warm package on arrival is not a sign of a damaged product — refrigerate it once it lands.

Refrigerate on arrival

Unbox, verify the batch and COA reference, then move sealed vials into the fridge the same day.

Travel with unmixed vials

If you must travel, take the lyophilized vial rather than a reconstituted one, and carry it in an insulated case.

Never check reconstituted vials

Cargo holds swing well below freezing. Reconstituted solution can freeze and lose potency.

Discard the vial if any of this is true

  • Solution is cloudy, discolored, or has visible particulate
  • Stringy strands or gel-like clumps have formed
  • The vial was left unrefrigerated after mixing for an extended period
  • The stopper is cracked, torn, or the seal was broken in transit
  • Past the labeled reconstitution window
  • The vial was frozen and thawed multiple times
